For half a century, the guiding principle of MCDS has been rooted in a single, yet powerful belief: By empowering people with disabilities, we empower our community. This approach is not just a mission statement, but a commitment reflected in the wide range of client services that foster independence, creativity, and meaningful community engagement for individuals with disabilities.
A central focus of MCDS is ensuring that the individuals we serve lead full and independent lives. To achieve this, we provide comprehensive services, including residential services, day programs, and employment services. These programs are designed to meet the unique needs of our clients, helping them grow personally and professionally.
Day Services and Greenhouse Program
MCDS has continued to expand its day services, offering enriching activities that promote both skill-building and creativity. One notable program is our greenhouse, which is now fully operational. In the greenhouse, clients engage in hands-on activities, from planting seeds to watching them grow into thriving plants. This process not only teaches valuable horticultural skills but also fosters a sense of accomplishment as clients witness the fruits of their labor from seed to full bloom.
As part of this initiative, we look forward to the day when MCDS clients can sell their produce at local farmers markets, further integrating them into the community and providing them with even greater independence.
Self-Expression Through Art
Another avenue of self-discovery and personal growth is our art program. With locations at both Sunflower Mercantile and our main facility, this program offers clients the time and space to express themselves creatively. Whether painting, drawing, or experimenting with new mediums, participants are encouraged to explore their artistic potential. These creative outlets not only provide therapeutic benefits but also allow clients to develop new skills and gain confidence.
Employment Services
MCDS’s employment services are a key component of our mission to foster independence. We work closely with clients to help them find meaningful employment in the community, offering training, assistance with job applications, and opportunities for hands-on experience. For example, some clients gain work experience at local employers including Pfizer, where they can build their resumes while contributing to a professional environment.
These employment opportunities empower clients by providing them with a sense of purpose and achievement, enabling them to take charge of their lives and their futures.
Community Engagement: Bridging the Gap
At MCDS, we believe that community involvement is crucial—not only for the personal fulfillment of our clients but also for creating connections between people with disabilities and the broader community. Our programs emphasize community-based outings, providing our clients with the opportunity to visit various locations, interact with others, and engage in activities beyond our facilities.
This active involvement helps break down barriers, fostering understanding and inclusivity while highlighting the valuable contributions that individuals with disabilities bring to the community.
A Vision for the Future
Looking ahead, MCDS is committed to growing our programs and expanding opportunities for the people we serve. Our goal is to continue creating pathways for individuals with disabilities to live, work, and thrive as active, productive members of society. By providing the tools, support, and encouragement necessary for success, MCDS is not just changing lives—we’re strengthening our community as a whole.
Through our comprehensive client services, we strive to ensure that every person has the opportunity to reach their full potential, proving that by empowering individuals, we truly empower everyone.
