For five decades, McPherson County Diversified Services (MCDS) has been a resource of hope and empowerment for individuals with disabilities in McPherson County. As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, we reflect on our journey and look forward to continuing our mission for another 50 years and beyond.
Founded on the belief that by empowering individuals with disabilities, the entire community is strengthened, we’ve remained steadfast in our commitment to providing quality services and support. From our origins as a preschool program in 1971, known then as Hope Preschool for Children, to evolving into MCDS in 1976, we've continually adapted and expanded to meet the changing needs of the community.
One of the key aspects of our evolution has been the broadening of our programs and services. Originally focused on special education for children, we now primarily focus on providing a comprehensive range of services for adults. Our commitment to helping individuals live independently has led to initiatives like day programs, residential care facilities, and work services through McPherson Industries.
A significant milestone in our history was the establishment of Cartridge King of Kansas in 1994, a venture that provided employment opportunities for people with disabilities. This initiative not only offered valuable work experience but also highlighted our dedication to fostering inclusivity and empowerment in the workforce.
In 2003, we took another leap forward with the relocation to a new facility in the BPU Industrial Park, signaling our continued growth and expansion. This move provided the space needed for administrative offices, day programs, life enrichment classes, and warehousing for local industries, further solidifying MCDS' presence in the community.
Beyond our direct services, we've remained committed to advocating for the inclusion of individuals with disabilities in all aspects of community life. Through partnerships with local businesses like Pfizer and initiatives like Sunflower Mercantile, we've demonstrated the value and potential of individuals with disabilities as contributing members of society.
We celebrate our 50th anniversary with a sense of pride in our accomplishments and gratitude for the community that has supported us throughout the years. However, our focus remains on the future, as we strive to reach more individuals, improve services, and expand residential housing options.
Our 50th anniversary is not just a celebration of the past but a reaffirmation of our ongoing commitment to empowering individuals with disabilities and building a more inclusive and compassionate community for all.
